"Wars and rumors of wars..." - Strike on Syria, eminent

Aug. 30, 2013

For many months now, the U.S. government has made it clear that that the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian government is a "red line" that cannot be crossed. Syria allegedly has crossed that line several times.

In recent days the American public, as well as an international community, has been inundated with pictures and videos of people that were the apparent victims of a chemical attack in and around the ancient city of Damascus, Syria. More than 1,300 people have been killed in this latest attack, it is reported. More than 100,000 people have died since civil war began. This war rages on with no end in sight - until possibly now. The U.S. government has said they are ready to strike Syria anytime, and are waiting for a decision by the Obama administration. The United Kingdom/Britain was thought to participate in this strike, however the House of Commons has decided not to be part of the attack. Reports say the Obama administration is in "Disarray," because of Britain's refusal to participate. A serious setback to Obama's plans, it is being said. However a statement was put out only this morning that though the U.S. respects and "values" Britain's decision, the U.S. is willing to "go it alone."
The Syrian government blamed rebels for the latest chemical attack. The rebels in turn say it was the Syrian government that used the chemical weapons. U.S. officials have said it was impossible for the rebels to have used the weapons because they lack the "delivery systems" to conduct the attacks. UN Inspectors have attempted to gather evidence of the attack and who was responsible. U.S. government investigators have also been searching for evidence, as well as other countries, including Britain, and France.
And more recently, media sources from around the world, are parading purported evidence, almost as fact; that indeed, the Syrian regime used chemical weapons on their own citizens.

Members of Congress, as well as a distrusting public has demanded to see the "irrefutable" evidence. The following link to the Guardian, includes a report about Israeli intelligence intercepting communications from "senior Syrian regime officials" about the chemical attacks, and turning that evidence over to the Obama administration.

The U.S. government has made clear that a strike is eminent against Syria; some stating that only military installations are the targets. However, "Opposition forces" fighting the Syrian regime have been told by Robert Ford, "Washington's point man with Opposition forces," that a strike was eminent within days and that they should prepare for talks in Geneva for a transition of power in Syria. Some U.S. officials contrarily, have said that the intentions for any strike do not include a regime change.
In my opinion, who on earth believes that?

The following images may put this conflict more in perspective:

Families carry their dead children away after an attack.

Syrian troops that have allegedly defected and are now fighting with the opposition against the Syrian regime, deploy in and around Damascus.

Bombed out areas of Syria.

The following came from Graham Hancock, noted writer of many books about ancient cultures and lands:

I am pleased to see that the macho posturing and muscle-flexing of Hague and Cameron in Britain has been somewhat reigned in after their embarrassingly belated realisation that the British people do not AT ALL support the lunatic idea of missile strikes and bombing raids on Syria. There are those amongst our politicians who imagine that it will make them look "like men" if they "act tough". The truth, however, is that the only act of real political courage in the face of massive pressure from the US and Israel will be to take a principled decision NOT to send the bombers and missiles to Syria. Bombs and missiles do not make peace and the death of a fellow human being is a death whatever weapon it is caused by, or whoever fires that weapon. All the more so in the Syria crisis which is so ringed around with ideology, lies and special pleading from all sides that it is impossible to know what the truth is about anything. The safest bet, since they lie about everything else is to assume that our politicians are lying to us about Syria as well.

I am as disgusted with President Obama as I am with our little men here in Britain. This is a President who won the Nobel Peace Prize for goodness sake!! If he had possessed any moral integrity when it was awarded to him so early in his Presidency, before he had done anything, he would have refused it and said something like "let's wait and see how I do". Well, we've seen how he has done. Another moral coward. Another liar. If he sends the bombers and missiles to Syria he should be stripped of that prize. I understand as of today he is claiming to be still "undecided" about  "retaliatory action" against Syria (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-23875121 and http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/10272874/Barack-Obama-warns-of-Syria-chemical-weapons-threat-to-US.html). Let us hope that public opinion will sway him also and this mad plan will be called off.

There are grave problems and grave issues at stake in Syria. We need to help the people of the region solve those problems. Bombing them and hitting them with missiles is not the way to solve anything. Love is what is needed here, not more hate.
